As a new parent, you’ve no doubt been told by your doctor to always put your baby on his back every time he sleeps or naps. So you might not realize that it’s also important for your little one to spend time on his belly while wide awake.
Tummy time is very important and you should introduce tummy time as early as possible. Tummy time is a great time to play and interact with your baby.
Make eye contact, use colorful toys and talk to your baby to keep them engaged. Choose your time of day for tummy time with care. Many babies are at their happiest first thing in the morning after a good night’s sleep.
Start with 2- 5 minutes every day. Your new baby may not like tummy time and will let you know by way of fussing up a storm! However you should work on soothing your baby each time and putting him down again for few minutes.
Tummy time helps strengthen the neck and shoulder muscles and promote certain motor skills. Tummy time can also prevent the back of your baby’s head from becoming flat (positional plagiocephaly).
Research suggests that babies who spend time on their tummies crawl on their stomachs earlier than do babies who don’t practice tummy time.
Remember: Never leave your baby unattended during tummy time
