Diaper Rash“Diaper rash” is a form of dermatitis or inflammation of the skin that occurs when the skin in the diaper area is exposed to wetness for too long.

It results in redness, rawness, burning and oozing of fluid from the rash.  It can make a baby extremely irritable and uncomfortable, especially during diaper changes.  Although it is a relatively benign condition, it may become infected by bacteria or fungus.  In fact, many children develop a secondary Candida infection, which requires anti-fungal treatment.  The usual go-to treatments include zinc oxide and hydrocortisone creams.   If you are looking for other options, you’ve come to the right place!

  1. Make sure you allow your baby to get some diaper-free time every day. Allowing the diaper area to get fresh air is one of the most effective ways to treat but also to prevent episodes of diaper rash.  Also, make sure that you always leave the area completely dry after bathing and changing her/him.
  2. Consider switching the brand of diaper that you’re using. I don’t have a particular brand that I recommend, but I have seen a few babies get better from a simple switch in brand of diaper.  Also, if you are using cloth diapers, consider switching to a disposable brand temporarily.
  3. Earth Mama Angel Baby makes a great diaper rash balm called Angel Baby Bottom Balm, which many moms swear by.
  4. Clef des Champs’ Biobaby Salve is a great one to try especially when the area gets infected because it contains black walnut, a strong antimicrobial.
  5. Weleda Calendula Diaper Rash cream is another product that has very soothing properties and can often clear a rash in 1-2 days.

I hope the above recommendations help you to clear up your baby’s diaper rash.  Remember that this often requires great amounts of patience and finding the right cream that works for your baby.  Sometimes a close look at mom’s and baby’s diet might be necessary in case there are some food triggers that could be contributing to the problem.
